Kokanee Salmon. It's official, I've got a new obsession. I learned a few months ago that Kokanee's inhabit a river just twenty minutes from my house. A few local newspaper articles, several hours of "googling," and way too much time staring into my phone watching YouTube videos and I have become determined to catch one of these boogers.
I'll admit, I am captivated by some of the oddities in the fishing world. Tiny little trout? Check. Slimy, stinky carp? Check (although I've yet to catch one). Whiskery catfish? Check. And now, those prehistoric-looking kokanee. What can I say, they've captured my heart from afar.
So, one day with a friend of ours, Jacob and I headed out in search of these mystical creatures. Upon arriving at the river the hunt was on, starting with the very technical art of looking for red spots in the water, nothing. So, what else is there to do than jump in and start fishing, technique be damned.
Several hours later, a considerable amount of rainbows (which I all but refused to photograph, due to their lack of Salmon genes) and a found oar later, no salmon. I'd missed my white whale.
But, here's the thing about fishing, they're still there. Today is another day to search for them and so is tomorrow and the day after. I will find them, one day. And if not, well I need a good excuse to get out of the house.
May you all find your white whale this weekend or, at the very least never stop searching.
